The 3rd annual International Women’s Day (IWD) Conference was held on Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham. The theme for the 2014 conference was Improving Access to Education and Public Health Benefits for Immigrant Women.
The IWD conference creates a space where immigrant women and other community members can come together to share experiences, and agencies working with them can network and share information.
Event Information
The keynote speaker for this year’s conference was Javier Diaz de León, Consul General of Mexico. His keynote address was titled The Empowerment of Women as a Key Factor for the Integration of Latinos in North Carolina.” IWD 2014 also featured presentations from the NC Justice Center and Durham Technical Community College. USCIS and the Department of Homeland Security were also on hand to talk about unlawful practices of immigration law and the Blue Campaign, respectively.
The conference also featured a Kathak Dance Performance by Neena Jha. Lunch was provided to all conference attendees courtesy of Havanna Grill.

Meet Our Keynote Speaker: Javier Díaz de León
Javier Díaz de León holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. He also earned a Master´s Degree in International Conflict Analysis from the University of Kent at Canterbury in England. Since 1991, he is a member of the Mexican Foreign Service, and currently holds the rank of Minister.
During his professional career he has served as: Deputy Consul General in San Diego; Deputy Consul General in New York and until August of 2010, Head of the Office for Migration and Hispanic Affairs at the Mexican Embassy in the United States. He has also served as Executive Director of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On April 2013, he was appointed by President Enrique Peña Nieto as Consul General of Mexico in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States of America.
