For the past few years, Lakeisha Howie has envisioned herself helping women and girls so they can accomplish their own goals and live their lives to the fullest. She began volunteering at InStepp in the summer of 2014 because InStepp’s mission aligns with her own goals of empowering women.
An industrial engineer who graduated with honors from NC A&T State University, Lakeisha lives in Durham with her husband and child and currently works as a supply network planner for a life sciences company. At InStepp, she helps with fundraising initiatives, work that she says has helped her become more focused on the needs of others. Lakeisha’s previous volunteer experiences include working with Cancer Services and launchingDreams in Motion, an organization dedicated to helping women fulfill their dreams. She also volunteered for Broken but Restored, an organization that helps women improve and restore their mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, and helped plan and organize a women’s conference and luncheon called Healing Through the Brokenness held in August 2014.
Lakeisha’s commitment to empowering women makes InStepp a perfect fit for her. She is inspired by the leadership of InStepp CEO Gilda Womble and urges new volunteers to “jump in and give it all you’ve got.” As for the future, she says “It is my hope that I can dedicate more time and effort to InStepp in the coming years and make a greater impact on the lives of women who so desperately need assistance.”
