Nona Saling was born in Pennsylvania and has lived in many locations, first migrating west and then back to the East Coast. She retired after a 30-year career in human resources and now lives in Chapel Hill with her black lab, Nylah, a rescue dog. Nona is known by her friends to be outgoing and energetic. She enjoys studying Spanish, reading murder mysteries, and traveling and has visited Europe, Central America, and Asia. Next up on her planned travel destinations are South America and Australia.
Nona connected with InStepp in Fall 2014 when she was looking for a volunteer opportunity that would allow her to use her human resources skills to help others. She works with the Job Club and Job Survival Skills program, helping women understand their strengths and teaching them how to use examples to describe their experiences and accomplishments. Nona also teaches English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) through the Durham Literacy Center.
Working with clients and staff at InStepp has helped her realize the difficulties women and their families face when they are trying to rebuild their lives after a life-changing event. She describes InStepp clients as brave and impressive in their motivation to succeed. She encourages others looking for volunteer opportunities to try Instepp, noting, “I think you will love the clients and staff.”
