Female Infanticide
Infanticide is the killing of a newborn child within the first year of its life. Female infanticide is when this killing of the newborn is due to the child being born female. There are many methods that people use to kill the baby. Some examples would be poisoning, deliberate neglect, throat slitting, drowning, and more. The motive for this crime is typically due to the devaluation of women in cultures where female infanticide is practiced. In areas where female infanticide is widely practiced, the belief of “preferring sons” is also widely present.
Child Marriage
Like infanticide, while child marriage isn’t specific to girls, it is deeply rooted in gender inequality and the devaluation of women. Some causes to this may be linked to gender inequality, a lack of education, or even cultural practices. Typically, child marriage is done simply because it has been a tradition for generations. Marrying off your child is also tied into poverty, as it allows families to reduce their expenses due to there being one less child to take care of. In cultures where this is practiced, women are also typically considered less than men, and in turn girls are considered a burden to families.
Marital Rape
Marital rape is a highly complex issue as it becomes very hard to prove that the victim did not consent. As recently as 1993, all U.S states have established laws against marital rape. Sadly, it’s much harder to prove marital rape than other types of rape. Since married couples typically have consensual sex, it sometimes takes additional evidence such as marital conflict, to prove that intercourse was not consensual.
