InStepp Ambassador Of the Month
Our Shining Stars

Each month, we highlight one of our many InStepp Ambassadors that contribute their time, energy and talent to our important mission. Our InStepp Ambassador for June 2010 is Carolyn Harris.

InStepp Ambassador of the Month
June 2010

Carolyn Harris

InStepp volunteer Carolyn Harris loves talking to seniors about their life histories and all the things that happened to them in their era. She appreciates their knowledge and wisdom and often seeks their advice because they are great counselors. That is probably why she has had such a significant impact as a coach, supporter, motivator and advisor in the life of her mentee, Angela.  “I want other women to know how important it is for women to reach out and help other women,” said Carolyn, a Senior Aseptic Manufacturing Technician at Eisai, Inc. in Research Triangle Park.

Born in Raleigh, Carolyn resides in Zebulon, North Carolina to be near her aging parents.  She spent most of her life in her hometown because she enjoys the quietness and space that comes with living in the country.   In addition to her hobbies which include shopping for unusual handmade jewelry, visiting the art museum, and reading about the history of slavery, Carolyn enjoys participating in the mime ministry in her church.  She has two adult children - Anthony who resides in Hawaii along with her two beautiful grandchildren Alia and Ian, and a daughter, Ashley, who lives at home with her.

For Carolyn, a domestic violence survivor, mentoring has taught her a lot.  “I have learned so much from Angela, my client. It has been a wonderful experience.  It feels good that God is using me to do His work. I get emotional whenever I help to lift my client’s spirit.  Her mentee, Angela, also feels that her relationship with Carolyn has been life changing.  “My mentor has really motivated me!” says Angela. “I can be down, and I’ll call my mentor and she will remind me of the things that I’ve accomplished.  My mentor reminds me to strive and to keep my priorities in order.”

When asked why she is supporting InStepp, Inc. as a volunteer, Carolyn indicated that from a faith perspective she believes in the company’s goals. InStepp helps “other women to be productive citizens. Women are challenged every day and need someone to encourage and show them they can succeed.  We should never look down on other females because you never know what God’s plan is for them.  Everyone has a purpose and we must help them recognize their purpose.”
